The Benefits of Physical Activity for Cognitive Decline
Physical activity is a key contributor to managing cognitive health and slowing cognitive decline, especially in older adults. Research by the National Institute of Ageing (2020) shows that regular movement improves brain function by enhancing blood flow, reducing neuroinflammation, and simulating the growth of new neural connections. For people living with dementia, physical activity can help maintain cognitive abilities, mood, strength, muscle control and coordination contributing to overall quality of life.

Encara has developed two specialised programs designed to provide physical and therapeutic support for people living with dementia.
- Our Active Minds Program is a personalised, evidence based 12-week program that integrates physical activity, therapy, and education to enhance happiness, health, and independence for home and community clients. Tailored to each participant’s unique needs and preferences, our program supports the individual and their family members and caregivers by providing critical education and assistance, ensuring holistic support for everyone involved.
- For residents aged 65 and over located in the Southeast Melbourne regions of the Mornington Peninsula, City of Casey, Kingston, Frankston and Greater Dandenong Regions, Encara is running our Dementia Rehabilitation Program, funded by the Southeastern Melbourne Primary Health Network. This 12-week program combines physical therapy with cognitive rehabilitation techniques, including art yherapy and aromatherapy, delivered by Encara’s team of Allied Health Professionals. The program aims to improve the well-being of individuals living with dementia or cognitive decline, focusing on both cognitive and emotional health, while also providing support and education for caregivers and family members.
Both programs are grounded in evidence-based research, ensuring that participants receive high-quality, individualised care designed to improve their physical and cognitive wellbeing. With a focus on both the individual and their support network, Encara’s programs provide a comprehensive solution to maintaining independence, enhancing quality of life, and supporting families as they navigate the challenges of Dementia.
